Welcome to the Magnolia/South Pike Area

Chamber of Commerce

Welcome! We are pleased to be able to present to you an overview of life in a small Southern town. We invite you to join us in person or contact us for additional information about our area. Come see us when you can!

Magnolia, Mississippi was settled in 1810 and incorporated on April 26, 1859. It became the county seat in 1872. The town was named by Mary Sinnot because of the abundance of beautiful Magnolia trees in the town at the time of its founding. It was originally called Magnolia Town, but later changed to Magnolia.

Historic Magnolia contains two National Historic Districts. The Myrtle Street District is said to represent a typical neighborhood at the turn of the century. The Southtown Historic District has a variety of late nineteenth century residential home, including three of Mississippi's premier Queen Anne residences and an antebellum Greek Revival cottage.

Significant murals depicting scenes of early Mississippi life painted during the depression as part of the WPA program are located in the Magnolia Post Office.

The City of Magnolia can be reached by Interstate 55 north or south, at exit 10, from the east on Highway 98 from Hattiesburg, MS and from the west on Highway 24 from Liberty, MS.
